Neck Pain

Neck Pain

Neck pain (cervicalgia) is common and generally nothing to worry about as usually the pain gets better after a few days and is not a sign of any neck problem or serious underlying condition. It can result from a sprain after bending your neck into an unusual position (by sleeping on too many pillows for example), from poor posture or even from sitting in a draught for too long – Sometimes referred to as having a chill. However, often there is no obvious cause for neck pain and doctors just refer to it as ‘non-specific’.

The head is supported by the upper back and lower neck and it is these that commonly cause neck pain. The uppermost three joints in the neck allow for most movement of your neck and head whilst the lower joints in the neck and those of the upper back form the support mechanism for your head to sit on. If this support system is affected adversely, then the muscles in the area can tighten which leads to neck pain.

There is no single best pillow for neck pain because of the many possible causes so to find the best pillow for you, you may first need to seek professional help from a doctor, chiropractor or physical therapist.
